God Loves Us

Stake Message May 2021

 May, 2021

Dear Sisters,
One of my favorite activities is reading old articles and talks from the General Officers of the church. I love to see the wisdom, foresight and spiritual growth of those called to lead our church. I recently stumbled upon a 1967 article by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland for The Improvement Era, entitled Show Him Your Hands. I loved it, and would like to share a portion of it with you.
Brother Holland tells the story of a man who was approached by a little boy and asked to come to the boys home, where his sister was seriously ill. Although he didn’t know the boy, the older man responded immediately. He found the home to be a wretched one-room basement in a tenement. The mother had died, the father had disappeared and the 15-year old sister had carried on for the younger children. For almost a year she had been both breadwinner and mother, and now she lay in the terminal stages of a fatal disease.
They talked that night of the future, of Heavenly Father’s plan for his children and of the joy that homecoming would bring. The girl found warmth and peace in this man’s words, but one persistent question kept coming to her child like mind;
“But how?” she asked, “How will he know that I belong to him?”
As he prayed silently for help, the man received even as he gave. Looking down at the frail little creature, he saw on the ragged blanket the shriveled and work worn fingers that had kept the dishes washed, the clothes ironed and the food cooked - fingers that by service and sacrifice had brought life to the little family.
“Show him your hands,” he said quietly. “He’ll know you belong to him.”
Now suppose that you and I were to pass today and we find ourselves in front of the Lord to be judged. Suppose he asked us to simply show him our hands. What if we were to be judged by the sacrifice shown on our hands? How would we feel? What would the Lord see?
Sisters, we see in your hands limitless sacrifice and love! We see wholehearted service for those to whom you minister. We witness endless devotion as you serve your families, fulfill your callings, and bear one another's burdens. You follow the example of Jesus Christ and emulate His love, hope and compassion. So when the day's work seems endless, and the To Do list never quite gets done...pause, and consider the gifts you are offering. Show Him your hands.
With Love,
Sister Jill Merritt - 2nd Counselor
